North Puget Sound History Day Contest 2020

Contest Date and Venue:

When: Saturday, 14 March 2020

Welcome to the home page for the North Puget Sound Region History Day Contest. National History Day is a fun and challenging event that encourages students to become historians by developing research, analysis, presentation, and social skills. Working individually or in groups, Junior Division (grades 6-8) and Senior Division (grades 9-12) students select a topic related to an annual theme. The 2020 NHD theme is Breaking Barriers In History. Students conduct extensive historical research using primary and secondary sources . . . and then distill their research and analysis into one of five presentations: a dramatic performance, a multimedia documentary, a museum exhibit, website, or historical research paper.

Eight regional contests are held around Washington State in February and March. Students may choose to compete by entering their project against others in the same division and category. Regional winners advance to the Washington History Day State Contest in early May @ Central Washington Unviversity. Students who finish in first or second place at the state contest in each category qualify for the National Contest, held June 14-18, 2020 at the University of Maryland in College Park.

The North Puget Sound Contest serves the geographical areas of Seattle, Bainbridge Island, Shoreline, Bothell, Kenmore, and Woodinville.

Student Registration

Welcome to the student registration site! Three important things

1. Please make sure that your teacher has registered first.

2. If you are part of a group project, have one group member register first and create the project entry. The other group members can then register with the project link

3. Students need to print out the permission and media release form, get it signed by their parents, and turn it in to their teacher in order to participate.

If your parents would like more information about the North Puget Sound regional contest, they may download the NHD Parent Letter. Keep scrolling down to see a tentative schedule for March 9th and a map of the school.

Teacher Registration

Welcome Teachers! You may begin your registration for the North Puget Sound Regional Contest here. You will need to register first, before your students register. Once your students have registered, you may log in and view their registration information to make sure it is correct. A parent information letter about the contest is provided here and on the student registration site. Students are also given a permission and media release form on their site for parents to sign and return to you. Teachers, please collect these forms and bring them with you to the contest on March 9, 2019

We are also asking teachers to reach out to their parent community and ask for volunteers or judges. Volunteers are needed to help monitor the judging rooms on March 10th, to make sure it is quiet for the presenters. Judges are always needed to help evaluate projects.  For those who contact you to register as a judge or volunteer please direct them the "Judge" or "Volunteer" tabs on the home page of this website.

Questions? Email Alan Plummer, NPSRC Coordinator, aplummer@nsd.org.

North Puget Sound History Day Contest: Saturday,  March 14th, 2020, 8 am - 4pm @ Northshore Middle School, Bothell, Washington

Judge Registration:  All judges will need to create an account on the home page of this site (right side "Create Account" option)

Thank you so much for volunteering to judge student projects for the North Puget Sound Regional contest. Without you, this valuable student experience would not be possible. Students conduct high level research on significant historical topics, publish them in a variety of creative ways, but need an audience and an evaluator to help them take their work to the next level. Your feedback and input are greatly appreciated.

As a judge, we will provide you with all the necessary training you need to give clear feedback to students. We will send a preview of materials via email ahead of time, and have a brief on-site training on the day of the contest. You will use consensus judging (in a group of two-three) to determine the rank order of projects using the national rubrics from NHD.

You may also choose one of the following options: Off site judging: websites or historical papers - (NOT at NMS) within a window of approximately three weeks in February.  On site judging: exhibits, documentaries, and performances - on March 9th, at Northshore Middle School, Bothell, WA. There are two levels to consider: the Junior Division (grades 6-8) or the Senior Division (grades 9-12). There are also time slots to consider (morning 9-12, afternoon 1-4 , or full day).

Let us know if you have any questions: Alan Plummer (aplummer@nsd.org). Again, thank you so much for being willing to judge at the contest.
